Toddler talking

Scott and Drew were at Costco when I got home. When they got home, Scott came inside with Drew and Drew promptly (even as I called out a greeting) began demanding "outside!" Daddy began trying to discourage this.

Me, coming into the hallway with my arms out: "May Mommy have a kiss?"

Drew: "No."

Me: "May Mommy have a kiss if she takes you outside?"

Drew: "Do dat!" And he lunges for me and plants a kiss on my lips, clinging to me and demanding, "Outside!"

We went outside, of course, as quickly as I could put my shoes on.

What astonishes me is the language connections being made in the past few months. "Do that" as an agreement to my suggestion strikes me as a remarkably sophisticated response for an under-2-year-old. Not yes, or no, or repeating what I said, but "do that". (Which is one of his new favorite phrases in the last couple weeks, I must note.)

When he grabbed his little plastic pig (which he did, I should note, by opening the front door, which he can just barely reach the handle on) and brought it outside, he declared "outside pig!"
