*sighs* Gah.
Okay, so I shouldn't be allowed to own or use computers, apparently. I had problems with Everquest's display. They sent me a form mail, that had links to the latest drivers for my card (which I had been able to find).
The drivers come with no technical support. I stared at that for a moment, unhappily, but then installed them - after carefully making sure they were the ones indicated for my card.
Bet you all already guessed it: my video is screwed. So badly I can only get it to come up okay in 16-color VGA, in fact, and at that it's only really reliable in safe mode when stuff doesn't preload.
Right now, I'm angry at everything involved, including myself. For the moment, I am not retrieving and reading email - I have LiveJournal because I'm using Scott's computer to view it. (I can view email in a web view, of course, but....)
I remembered to turn off my support notifications so I won't get hundreds of emails while not reading them. May be the only thing I've done right since starting this fiasco.
Okay, maybe not the only one. I think giving up on working on it till I've calmed down may also qualify. I'm sure I could find some way to make it worse, and it's not like there's data loss. In a worst-case scenario, I'll just end up hauling it to the local computer store. I actually have considerable faith in their ability to put back together properly what stupid users have broken. Even if the right drivers aren't available, a new video card would do the trick.
I really, really prefer to think that I or Scott will be able to put it right, though. When I'm calmer, and/or he's home.
Addendum: Scott's home. I asked him to look at it tomorrow, when I go for my eye appointment. (I'm a horrid fussbudget nerve bundle when someone's working on my computer. I don't like it, but I'm bad at avoiding it. I usually go upstairs and read a book to avoid being a pain, but an appointment is as good a time as any.) At last it's just video. Data loss scares me a lot more; this upsets and annoys me, but....
