Lord of the Rings.
So, I finally went to see it. Two points, and then remarks:
1. Boyfriends who buy the largest possible drink size going in to a long movie are evil.
2. Girlfriends who decide that if you're going to get the largest drink, you might as well get the largest popcorn (just 25 cents more!) are stupid.
Needless to say, I took a break betwixt the end of the movie and the theater exit. And how did I end up with 3/4 of that drink, anyway?
So, the reviews were mixed. Lots of "it's good", some raving "it's wonderful", the occasional it-sucks because there was something not done they thought should have been, or done they thought shouldn't, a couple cases of music too loud remarks, and a couple remarks about gore. (Oh, and one review commenting that the ending didn't resolve things. Umm. I don't think that needs any more said....)
I liked it. I am not going to evangelize its praises; I am not going to go back and see it again. But I would like to get it when it comes out on DVD. I had a very good time; it was well worth the price of admission (well...moreso because Scott paid for it, but even if I'd bought the tickets and popcorn, I'd've been glad I did ;). I had a grand time.
The battles were a bit gory, yes, but my lasting impression was of vistas and greenspace, not the battles. I had a little trouble taking those seriously because of the sound effects and other special effects anyway. (This is not a criticism; it might be from others, but I like some niggling little detail that feels 'off', and I like not seeing a whole lot of gory wounds. I liked how they handled combat, for the most part, just fine.)
Since I haven't read the books, I can't speak to those people who remark on its faithfulness to, or departure from, same. The music didn't kill me (astonishing, as I'm usually quite sensitive to loud noises - yay). And I'm firmly in the "it's good" camp. Edging into great; it's good enough I want to own it, once it's out on DVD. Just not good enough to lure me back to the theater, especially not at full price; but very rarely does a movie manage that, barring special circumstances, anyway.
It was a good movie, and it was worth the time, and I had fun. And now it's late and I'm not thinking clearly, and it's time for sleep.
