Laundry.
So, last week we did our laundry at a friend's house, because we couldn't do it here, because our laundry was "closed until further notice".
This week, our laundry is open again, but you have to sign up with the managers for when you'll use it and for how long (preference given to people who've been tenants longer), and they'll unlock it for you. Competing with our neighbors isn't a big deal - we long ago discovered that no one else wants to do laundry on Saturday afternoon, unless it's a one-off and they're desperate. Since I generally spend at least one day each weekend at home, and Scott sometimes does as well (but is more often out gaming at least in the evenings), we have mostly done laundry on Saturdays or Sundays, and it works nicely.
This has happened once before - the signup sheet, not the "closed until further notice" sign preceding it. At that time, we all got a notice about not washing stuff that had oil/chemicals/pet hair in it, in the laundry. Turned out the two college-age boys in one of the units worked as mechanics and were tossing their work clothes in the machines and other stuff was also getting washed that, umm, wasn't kind to the machines or the loads after them, especially not if they were overloaded.
No statement of how come it was done this time, but I'll just put these facts out there:
The notice that we needed to sign up also reminded us that the laundry is for things like clothes and towels, not for shoes, boots, carpets, and other heavy stuff. (No duh These are standard machines and not built to handle that, which is why my comforter, quilt, etc., went to the laundromat last time they needed cleaning. They'd be lucky not to kill the machines in the laundry and they certainly would not get cleaned properly.)
It stated that children under 18 aren't permitted to operate the laundry equipment and, with the exception of children too small to be left alone in the apartment, are not permitted in the laundry room at all.
And when I went in to do our laundry today, one of the washers (not the expensive one, which can handle larger loads, thank goodness) and one of the dryers (the expensive one, which can handle larger loads, drat) were marked as out of service, with tape over the coin slots.
Okay, I can't piece together exactly what happened, but I have a half-decent idea. I also have clean clothes for the next week, which is a happy thing.
