Whine factor overload....
Today was okay, it really was. It had its moments, but none too bad, I got stuff done. Then on the way home, the rain was crazy-wild and beautiful - not bad enough to be a driving problem, and everyone remembers what water means right now - but gorgeous and very heavy. My wipers actually had to be on high at one point.
Then I wasted the evening. I tried to update to the latest Win32 client and get music detection working, which meant adding a patch for the media player. Only, since I have auto-updating crap, I didn't check the version. Ran the patch. Ran fine. Installed. Figured, since it hadn't asked a reboot, I'd do one to be sure - by installing the critical patch I needed. Installed. Rebooted. No problem, all good.
Except new client feature didn't work. Was losing my mind, slowly but surely. Could tell problem was with media player, since it should have changed display. Hit help->about to see if it would tell me whether the extra had taken, even tho' it said it had. And found myself staring at version 8. Patch was for version 9. Was not up to date. Was not offered 9 in Windows update. Patch had installed, found it in add/remove programs.
I was pissed. Net result: had to uninstall patch. That didn't help. Reboot. No dice. Fine, run restore procedure, kick entire laptop back to this morning in terms of software and settings. NOW able to install Windows media player 9. BUT not able to add patch or test: LiveJournal down, link to patch lost (but retrieveable from LJ).
Then realize LJ not down, can't get to status page or anywhere else either (but the mush I'm on? is fine, I can chat there and all). Ping. Can't find addresses. Stupid DNS problems.
Discover Windows media player has ditched ALLLLLLL previous settings. List of music? Gone (easy to rebuild, as only two folders, but infuriating since no warning it would blitz all settings, StupidPieceOfMicrosoftCrap). Also gone, my playlists. This is less cool, since reconstructing some is difficult. Have back the character one, thanks to help from
dansa (I couldn't get to my notes on it, since I couldn't get anywhere outside my local machine without an ip or pre-existing connection).
Finally got connection to LJ back. Re-downloaded patch, applied. Tried again. It now works.
This is good. This is very good. I still have to reapply the Windows update, though. I think I can only take so many of these in one evening...patience is definitely NOT one of my strong points, and I spent most of it keeping quiet in a meeting this afternoon, I think.
