Mlrgh. Good books, though.
It's foggy out there, but in a strange way. The fog seems to start halfway across the field, in terms of where you see it, and yet the trees beyond that at the horizon are crisp through it, backlit by the orange of the sunrise. Gorgeous.
I really should not be awake to see this. Last night, I logged off everything at 10:45, with the intent of heading straight to bed. But I'd been reading Elizabeth Moon's Trading in Danger off and on through the day and decided to pick it up and finish the chapter I'd paused in the middle of. I went to bed after I finished it, at 1:45 am.
I really should still be asleep, but I woke around 6:30 with a remarkably stuffed-up head, unfortunately, and between that and the light coming in the window, getting back to sleep wasn't happening. At some point today, I expect I'll have to nap. Blah.
Enjoyable book, though as is the other book I finished earlier yesterday, Dragon Bones by Patricia Briggs. I'm not sure either qualifies as "excellent" but they were both fun to read. Dragon Bones is an interesting story with interesting heroes, but it felt a little more like they were along for the ride than actually accomplishing anything. Key points of resolution were left too much open to chance. Trading in Danger was much better in that regards and in general a very good book. The problem I have here in deciding what I think is that these Moon books in this universe, about this type of character, have a pattern. This one broke it. I kept expecting the book to return to it, and it didn't - and it was low-key enough, compared to the earlier pattern, to be a bit boring. On the other hand, taken on its own it's not a bad tale, and I wonder if we mightn't see more of the main character. I hope so.
Some weekend when I can afford to go to bed at 2 am again.
