Day, so far...not so bad, really.
Got to the Gardens a bit after nine (members' hours end at 10, when it opens to the public). Wandered through but didn't really linger - I was not in a contemplative mood, perhaps aided by the fact that work was going on at the upper pond. Members' hours happen when the employees are caring for the Gardens before opening, so sometimes you encounter work. This is usually cleaning, raking (either leaves up, or just designs in the gravel), feeding the fish, trimming and training the plants, moving things around and setting up the pavillion if needed, preparing the gift shop for the day, etc. And most of the time, if you are not paying attention, you'll miss most of it (which would be a shame if they're feeding the koi, which is quite amusing to watch; they positively swarm).
This morning, they were doing repairs to the little "waterfall" that comes into the upper pond. For some time, it's been clear that work on the upper pond was in the offing; there have been hoses where hoses usually are not at all, as subtle as you can make such things, but there, and the waterfall and other pieces have not been running. Well, this involved moved rocks, tools, three guys, and poking around in there. Not sure what they were doing; I was curious, but not curious enough to stop and watch, so ignorance is necessarily the price I pay.
Went on to the zoo. I'm already thinking I will likely not consider zoo membership worth it, and will let it lapse, but it is kinda cool not to have to think about cost to get in, anyway. I'm not that fond of zoos normally, and the Oregon zoo is only okay (years ago it was awful, so I suppose this is an improvement). They have two eagles, now (rehab birds who aren't suitable for release). On the other hand, they have concerts, special programs, and other things. We'll see. I was just not entirely enthused.
Then back home, stopping at four bookstores in an effort to replace more of our hardcovers with paperbacks (which succeeded, though I still need to replace more - I hate the way hardcovers eat up shelf space). Very pleased with the results in the library, overall. Of course, this means rereading books, everything from Lackey to Gilman. (I do love Mrs. Pollifax. I want more Mrs. Pollifax, especially more like the earlier books. I think she wrote herself into a corner in terms of what the character would do, though, so I don't really expect more.)
It is so nice having two ACs. The computer room is liveable, and yet I know I will be able to sleep in the bedroom tonight. And, now I can properly test my USB card. (Last test, it was somewhat flaky with two devices - which may have been due to heat, but I don't think so, and so this time it has the supplemental power. So far, it's juggling a USB hub and three devices just fine, but I haven't asked it to run two of them at once yet. I'll try that in a bit, here.)
Scott got me a sweet little card. For no reason at all. Scott rocks. :)
