I should add to the bit about the LARP, that after the eshu (who had enchanted the werewolf: the knight wasn't there, so we needed a fighter-type to be a guard on this quest, and the werewolf was a galliard who had been trading stories anyway!) gave David the crown and swore to him, a mage came along who needed "the crown of a king, freely given" for his quest. His timing was hysterical, because I don't believe the player had known that the king had in fact gotten an actual crown.

Haley told David that while he had a crown, it was not his truest crown; a symbol of kingship, yes, but not a symbol of his kingship. And so he gave it over willingly, and the mage accepted it. (Of course, to the mage it was twine and bits of twigs and other odd bits. But hey, he accepted it and it worked.)

And then later on, in the big climactic battle, the mage used that to stand as David's champion, because he had been given a piece of jewelry by the king. (Alas, we all forgot a key clause in the requirements stated to the villain in the riddle contest, and thus he got to walk away. He didn't win, but he didn't lose either. Hmm.)
