Weather.

The radio announcer just noted that the snowpack in the mountains is at about 155% of normal. They think this is wonderful - we've had a very dry year, so it bodes well for next year. (The way they phrased it implied they thought it would be wonderful if things kept on this way.)

Well, maybe. Not if it's at 155% of normal come thaw, maybe. Have they completely forgotten the part where this state floods?

It isn't the amount of snowpack per se that causes flooding. We have had years with 200% snowpack with almost no flooding. Flooding is dependent on how fast the snow pack melts in the spring. If it does it "normally", then we don't have much flooding. If it happens real fast, then we do.

Of course, having 155% of snow pack could make the flooding worse than having 100% if it melts too fast.

I must be having a pedantic morning. :-)
