Yay! Shopping!

I got together with Mom today and we did a bit of shopping. I like spending time with my parents, so I'm not sure why I don't do it more often. It's funny - I don't go out shopping with people my age at all (excepting visits/trips, I guess), but I enjoy shopping with mom. She had stuff she wanted to look for and one item she wanted my input on and, really, there were almost no impulse purchases (all mine, I think, and all small).

But we wandered through the mall. Mom saw the inside of a Claire's (amusing stores, those, if sort of scary); much more enjoyably, we wandered through Made In Oregon, Your Northwest, The Real Mother Goose - just whatever interested us in the mall, looking at the nifty things.

We went up to the food court for lunch and, after discussing the options, settled on Indian food. I got something low on spice - it had more curry bite to it than I expected, but still within my tolerance, and it was very good. (Honey lemon chicken over rice.)

After we'd finished there, we went to Target to get a couple things Mom wanted and then went down to Cost Plus where we wandered through all the aisles without buying anything. I really want a papasan, some day. I really have nowhere to put one and probably wouldn't use it; so far that's been enough to keep me from buying one. :) Some of the little art pieces and whatnot were also tempting, but there wasn't anything there I really wanted in the sense of "gee, I'd like to have this in my house".

We'd gotten together around 10; I think it was about 2 when we split up to head home. I stopped for gas, and then at the store to price claritin (first time I've looked now that it's over the counter). I was not amused. It costs me $15 for 30 pills prescription (because of my insurance; I think it was closer to $60 for that many pills for the uninsured, when I started taking it). Over-the-counter in the 10-pill pack (the largest I could find), it's $14. OW.

I had to stop and get my birth-control prescription refilled anyway, so I asked if they would refill the claritin. They haven't re-evaluated it yet to figure out what to do about it, the prescription form is still covered for now. So I refilled for 90 pills. My prescription says I can refill until May, so if they are nice and let us at least get that, I'll do another 90-day refill in 3 months. I'm deeply hoping they'll continue to cover this if prescribed....

We'll see. It's been a good day so far. Not long after Mom and I left the mall, it went from 'lightly rainy' to 'pouring' (not sure if that was the time, or my steady drivingt south), which it's still doing now. It's gorgeous out there, grey and rainy and wet and cool and clean.

I had the same reaction, except my 10-pill pack was $10 (at Walgreen's, by the way). However, it has been pointed out to me that Costco has a larger pack for less, so I advise trying any bulk-food-and-stuff store to see if you can get a better deal. Also, sometimes insurance will reimburse OTC stuff if the price exceeds the copay, though it depends on your insurance (fewer and fewer these days, alas).

The other thing is, soon there will be generics on the shelves, and those are likely to be significantly cheaper. Probably by the time you run out of your current refill there will be a better alternative.

Nope, patent's officially expired. I guess they got it extended once already from what I can find in news, and couldn't get it extended again. I also just found a news story saying there's already a generic out, "Alavert", so I'll have to look for that (Walgreen's didn't have it yet when I bought my last batch, but I need to pick up more soon).
