Got up this morning at 6:20. At 6:25, when I was in the computer room grabbing several things, the UPSs beeped as the power flickered. It steadied, I relaxed, and then it went out completely.

I love power outages. I especially love them when it's still pitch black outside, and when I'm on call for work. Why do I love them when I'm on call for work? Well, once the UPS supporting the DSL modem goes out, I cannot do much that's useful from home, until/unless I get my ISP to turn on the phone connection (which they will do if you need it, but if you want it all the time you have to pay extra). Plus, a lot of support tasks are harder over low-speed connections anyway.

Scott had snoozed the alarm, so I made sure he knew it wasn't going to go off again. Called in the outage, got ready for work in the dark, and we both headed out. Just before we left, I called for an update, and they said at least 1000 (just over 1000, less than 1100) people were affected, service to be restored by 8:30, but they had no idea what caused it. Wonderful. At least we had hope, given we're on the far eastern edge of Wilsonville, while Scott works at the far western end, that he'd have power at work.

I doubt he did/does.

As I was heading to work, all the lights and everything were out - the traffic lights, the whole bit - all the way through north Wilsonville. Fortunately, people were remembering to play nice and take turns, and traffic was actually flowing smoothly. Of course, it was also not yet 6:45 am, so there simply were not that many people there yet. :P (Okay, not all the lights. The fire station had lights. But I sort of assume they'll have generators there.)

As I was headed north on I-5, I saw a backup on I-5 south of people waiting for the north Wilsonville exit. The line extended...oh, probably 2/3 of the way to 205 or more? And the radio picked about that time to tell me that the power outage was the News of the morning. Major feeder line out, "most" of Wilsonville all the way south to parts of Canby.

Hence, my suspecting Scott is still in the dark. Fortunately, everything's fine starting just a bit north of Wilsonville, so my work has power. I'd much rather actually be able to do what's required of me, when on-call.
