I normally let them graze, but technically it's fine to feed cats of their age and health twice a day and pick it up after an hour. Dinner goes down at 6 pm - so they had four hours to eat dinner before the fast started. Normally, breakfast is at 6 - Apple had to wait until about 7:20, when Babe and her carrier went out the door. Not too bad.
As far as shutting them away, the only option for that would be the upstairs hall bath, and in weather like we've been having it turns into an unpredictable periodic oven of a room. It probably would have been okay overnight, but I'd hate to risk it - and neither of them like being shut in or dealing with closed doors, either. I'd've felt worse about that than about Apple sharing the fast.
