First: after I posted the preceding, we went to the Japanese Garden. Scott dropped Drew and I off at the entrance and then hunted parking. It took him a full loop of the area, but he did get parked (literally like 5-10 minutes later). Drew and I had a great time sitting on a bench outside and people-watching while we waited.
Once Scott rejoined us, we got Drew into the Infantino on me and went through the Garden. It was veryvery busy. (Nice day, weekend, summer, not too hot, art show in the Pavillion? Oh yeah.) But still very pleasant. Drew was calm and quiet and alert for the whole thing - we had a watch-everything baby. He was very interested in/reactive to the waterfalls. And the deer scare was fun to watch him with, but it went off too soon after we got there for Scott to video his very first reaction. 'Twas still cool.
He was so calm that I decided to go into the Pavillion and check out the art show, which I had originally thought not to do. I put my palms under his arms and he took hold of my index fingers, so I knew I had partial hand control, but I stayed well back from the art anyway - he could still kick. But he didn't. He occasionally reached a little, but mostly he just looked. I could tell when something really fascinated him - I would turn away and his head would turn opposite my motion. Usually I'd stop a little longer until he looked away. They had mood music playing and I was swaying slightly to it, moving his hands slightly to it; that seemed to satisfy him. He was in a very gentle mood, even for him.
Going out the front, we passed the pottery demonstration and I stopped to watch - and found Drew fascinated. The man doing it was in the process of spinning his clay on a stick to widen the interior of whatever he was making (a jar or vase, at a guess; but I'd missed the start, if he even said). We wandered away again when he stopped spinning it and Drew became bored. After that Drew was calm but not interested until we got to the gift shop, where one of the chimes fascinated him. He wanted to grab it - if I remember right, mostly when it fell silent. But he was again very calm; he didn't get at all upset that I had his hands and didn't let him grab. (But I did ring it again for him.)
That's his first time at the Garden. I hope some of that was his reaction to it and not just a fluke - because it mirrors my love of the place and tendency to calm there, if so. That would be neat to share.
Second: On our way back, we realized we were hungry, so tried to decide where to go. Drew got fussy too, so that was three hungry people. We went to Babies R Us first because it was on our way, we had something we vaguely wanted, and the setup there for changing and feeding babies is so nice. They've actually made sales to me because I wanted to use that room, in the past. Probably will again!
Then we went to Chevy's for Mexican for lunch. I don't go there often, but oh yum. Mental note: soft taco, carnitas. Get again. YUM. I have enough left for dinner tonight, too, since I ordered a three-item platter to have variety (and dinner...). Hehehehe.
Drew sat in a high chair throughout, played with his toy, etc. He got bored near the end and was fussy, so I was letting him chew on my fingers...and tada. His first teeth are actually in far enough that they can be felt, not just guessed at based on his behavior! I say teeth plural because it looks like he's getting both bottom-front at the same time. Heh.
Drew's ongoing lack of interest in table food abruptly vanished at Chevy's. He wanted to get his hands on our food so bad. So of course there's nothing in the bunch that resembles anything we can give him yet, everything had too many unknowns/untried ingredients. However, if this isn't a fluke, we're moving into territory where maybe non-milk food won't be Evil. That would be cool. :D And means I need to consider my orders more carefully when we're all out at a restaurant, so there's something to offer him.
He was, apparently, so fussy because he was tired. When I scooped him out of the high chair (the first he's sat in at a restaurant - he was offered one at Shari's when Jon visited, but I wanted to snuggle him that day), and cuddled him, he was drifting in and out almost instantly. He was so out of it by the time we got to the car that he barely bothered to blink at me as I set him in his seat, and he didn't react at all as I put his arms through the strap. LOL.
Of course, he napped all the way home, so I had better go take my turn at watching him now. Scott and I are both in need of naps, but Drew is wide awake now. :)
