Yesterday, we had plans to get together with Uncle John and Aunt Julia in the afternoon.

In the morning, we went to the rummage sale at St. Anthony's, but only briefly; there wasn't anything there we wanted and they were light on the categories of stuff that did interest us. (Well, okay. Drew wanted one thing: the four-foot-diameter fan they were using to keep part of the rummage sale cool. Sorry, punkin, not only is it not for sale, we don't have room for that. But he did love it!)

We went from there to Sweet Tomatoes for lunch, where I attempted again to get him to eat more foods with protein and iron. He wanted his veggies, and his cheese, and some jello. Heh. (Mac'n'cheese with bacon was acceptable, however.)

Then home where he got his nap, and then off to OMSI mid-afternoon for the promised meetup. It was, as always, good to see them - and they got to see Drew interact with the physics lab and then run happily around the kids' area like a joyful little boy. Which, judging from the reactions, was fun for them too (it was for me, I admit). Highlights: return of the Van de Graaf generator. The little bellows-organ that he totally ignored last visit was now fascinating and he actually pushed the levers well enough to get it to make noise. Playing with the balls. And in the water area. And drinking from the water fountain. And a little computer-game thing painting in butterflies where Scott controlled the trackball while Drew clicked. (Drew enjoyed clicking regardless of result, as far as I could tell.)

And the Segway. Good day to go to OMSI - they had a Segway on site with a little practice ride for anyone who wanted (and was big enough, presumably). Drew was indifferent to it while his Dad held him - at least, until I got on it. Then I'm told his eyes got big and the Segway became interesting. Heehee. When I first got on I had trouble balancing and it wanted to jig back and forth, but once I got my weight shifted it moved nicely. I don't think I want one any time soon - they're too expensive, and not much point to it - but it was rather fun to get to try one out.

After that we wanted dinner, but we hadn't picked a place in advance. So I used the Yelp app on my phone to figure out what was near. After a bit of discussion, we settled on an Italian place, specifically Iorio - and yes, I had a good idea what we were getting into from the Yelp reviews. It was nearby and it sounded delicious. I called ahead and confirmed they'd be able to accomodate us (it was not quite 5 and they open at 5 - I don't know how well this would have worked later in the evening, as reservations are recommended on weekends especially). It was easy to find, though we missed the little parking lot and street-parked, but that worked well enough.

The interior of the place is gorgeous, and the food was incredible. And Drew ate a little bit of this and a little bit of that and appeared to enjoy himself greatly. (Although we're lucky we had sodas at the table; the water comes without ice, and he's teething and kept demanding ice. That could have gotten strident.)

So at one point as we're entertaining him and sitting about, he is pointing at Aunt Julia's phone and demanding it. And she gives it to him. She wasn't sure if he'd even be able to unlock it or not - there's just one button to do it - but of course he unlocked it in about 30 seconds. So then she suggested I call it and see how he reacted, and he didn't answer but boy was he fascinated when it started ringing. Well, it went to voice mail and I didn't hang up right away, and what I didn't realize until later was that he managed to call back and end up in my voice mail. So I have a 13-second recording of the table, from his perspective. LOL. He also typed in some texts (and sent one; I got a text message consisting of just a space), and called someone else.

Handing your cell phone to a toddler: always an adventure. Not always a wise one, but always an adventure.

And from there, home. I figured Drew would either sack out, or be wide awake. Points for Murphy's Law: he was wiiiiide awake. Finally sacked out around 9:00 or 9:15, by which time we were both very, very tired. (He was up at 6 this morning, of course. Because sleeping in is for grownups. Grownups who don't have toddlers, that is.)
