What's in my purse? Short form: way too much.
(Items with a * are not going back in after this.... Whether I keep them or not, they're leaving the purse.)
Main pocket:
A box of Aquafresh dental gum.
My claritin.
My hard case for my eyeglasses.
Sorta-thin white woven gloves, for when the steering wheel is Too Cold To Touch.
The sunglass-addons for my glasses.
*A used ticket to see Harry Potter (from Saturday of my California visit, 'twould appear). Another from that Friday.
*A piece of Marriott notepaper with a friend's home phone number (same trip).
Bottle of acetaminophen (store brand).
Container of blue plastic brushpicks.
Electronic access card for the front door of the building where I work, in case I want to go freeze my fingers and toes off after-hours or on the weekend.
Memo notepad, with phone numbers, silly notes, etc.
Pocket sketchpad.
*Miniature notepad with various incoherent mush-code notes.
*Li-Young Lee's latest book of poetry, Book of My Nights.
*Check-in leaflet from a Marriott hotel.
*Ghiradelli dark-chocolate-with-white-mint-filling square. (This would have gone back in, except it didn't survive discovery.)
Container of spearmint tic-tacs. Another of orange.
*Several loose orange tic-tacs, having escaped their confinement. :P
Anti-fog lens cloth.
Lens cleaner spray bottle.
Mechanical pencil, lead refills, regular eraser, mechanical click-extend eraser.
Medium-size journal, in a very silly rather neon-ish book cover to protect (I hope) the nifty pressed-floral cover it really has.
*A piece of paper with part of a song whose lyrics I hate, and which I (for some reason) felt compelled to attempt to share with a friend at one point.
Purple pen, 2 black writing pens, 4 black Micron pens in various sizes.
Main pocket, sub-pocket:
Tube of betadine ointment,
Ventolin inhaler (for asthma).
Several lactaid tablet packs.
Press-through packet of several decongestant tablets.
Eyeglass repair kit.
Spare keys to each car, and a small key I have no idea what it goes to.
Side pocket, wide:
*Passenger receipt for trip to California.
*Starbucks coffee receipt.
*Gas receipt from recent drive to visit someone in Washington.
*Note of parking place at airport.
Bonus card from bead store.
Tiny turtle and frog figurines (1 each).
7 raspberry creme savers.
2 wallets, including various membership, credit, business, and id cards; a photo of Scott before the beard; a photo of Ethan before he went blond; lots of spare change (but no bills).
Side pocket, thin:
1 black writing pen.
Four tubes of lip gloss - but only two types (go figure, I hate to run out of either).
Checkbook for checking account, journal for savings account.
*Red-brown hair band.
Plastic "wallet insert", sans wallet, with inspirational little remarks on plastic cards inserted. (No, I don't ever read these....)
Pocket on one end:
(This pocket's sized to hold a cell phone, maybe.)
The wadded up 'over-the-shoulder' strap for the purse, which adjusts so poorly I'd use it only if I really needed to.
A 'dog tag' which lists my asthma and allergies to medicine, attached to a chain which loops around the loop just above the pocket (intended to attach the strap that's wadded up in this pocket, in fact).

I could ditch the candy, and the journal, and the sketching supplies, if I needed to cut down. It's been commented my purse is large enough to squeeze a little laptop into. This is not true, but it is close enough to look that way unless you put it next to one of the smaller laptops currently available. ;)
Re:
I typically like to carry a smaller purse... I feel like I'm carrying around a backpack otherwise. ;)

I really could pare it down, but I'm used to a large purse, and I really hate being caught short on something I often need.
Of course, if I get totally used to my contacts, I can change the balance of power in the purse a bit. ;)

Some potentially important drugs, generally antivert and tylenol with codeine just in case of vertigo or migraine since I can get either.
Tissues. (Hate to not have them.)
Sanitary Napkin in the little not easy to see compartment, because it's easy to carry around and every once in a while it becomes important.
Pen(s).
Little Journal.
Wallet if I'm bringing my purse because I don't have any pockets.
Possibly a book.
I usually just go out with my wallet and a tissue or two.
