Today was interesting. Went to clean the totalled car out this morning - they open at 7:30 so we were there a bit before, and went down and got everything once they were open. It's a bit worse-looking than I realized from Scott's description, but not bad. The bumper was yanked down at a sharp angle, as was the trailer hitch (basically torn loose and angled maybe 45 degrees). The plate to which the trailer hitch was attached had pulled down a bit.

The right rear body area wasn't sheltered completely by the bumper and had bits of reddish-pink paint on it and some crumpling. Some portion of the action (probably the downward pull from the plate the trailer hitch was on, I would guess) had managed to buckle the back of the car very subtly. Where the trunk fastened, it bowed inward, less than half a centimeter but enough to be visible when looked at from below. Also enough to make opening the trunk annoying but not impossible - it was just reluctant.

Very very glad Scott did not drive that anywhere except into his friend's driveway. I seriously doubt it was road-safe, that plate was added to brace it in the first place.

Work was interesting. Design meetings, and I now have to document up a major enhancement by Thursday so we can start the commenting process, but I should be able to do it in a couple or four hours tomorrow. Wish me luck finding them....

Did some weeding in the back yard tonight. Not as much visible progress as I'd like (I would like to use psionics to just lift all the weeds up and drop them in the yard debris container, all at once, so I realize my expectations are a bit on the high side) but enough, anyway, that I feel like I accomplished something, which is good.

Time now for bed, since I'd like to be awake enough to document enhancements tomorrow....

And you know, most of the problems from this morning may be fixed, as the status site says, but I still can't get into this site reliably or post when I want to. So color me extremely unthrilled. Anyway, this was written at about 9 at night, I'll try to post it again in the morning, as I am going to bed now.

Progress is measured in degrees of distraction and interest.

Today was more documentation (and much more successful at making time for it) of the enhancement. I thought it would take me 2-4 hours to finish documenting. It took me 5. In my own defense, that's partly because I kept getting interrupted, which meant I had to come back to it and re-find my place and flow. Fortunately, this was anticipated, and I had a check-list of what to put in, so at least I wasn't losing pieces or havng to see if I'd already put them in.

The document's not complete - but the first draft is. It's gone out to be looked at. I have a book on the topic that Scott was able to get for me (they're doing something similar at his workplace, except the data and usage is entirely different, but the base concept is similar, and the book is somewhat applicable). So I may also have cause to update it in the next few days. The book is very readable, so far.

I wanted to go exercise in the fitness facility at work. My key-card didn't work on the front door a while ago, so I had to turn it in and get a new one. By the time I got a new one, I was doing some walking outdoors, but it's getting too hot for that now. So now I find out that my card does not work to get into the fitness room. I don't know if it works on the doors at work. I'd have to arrive before six am, or leave after six pm, to be able to test it. During the day they are locked in 'enter freely' mode and wouldn't respond to the cards meaningfully anyway.

Either way I need a new card, but it's the difference between "give me it in addition, and after I prove it works, I'll give you the old one that only works for the front doors" and "screw this, I complained about working and you gave me another not-working card?"

We'll see. It probably will work on the front doors and they just forgot the fitness room. You have to sign a form for that, gods know if they keep decent records.

The buildout at work is behind schedule (when is construction ever not, except when you're counting on some part of it not starting yet?) but going fairly well. They were doing some wall-work today (smoothing at the very least; not sure if they're painted or that's just an undercoat/treatment - it looks good enough to be the paint itself but I thought that wasn't until this weekend). I would have gone home (I have problems with that sort of thing) but it turns out the ventilation is such that all the fumes went into the hallway (building hallway, that everyone uses, not our office hallway). So I didn't even notice until I needed the restroom partway through the day. My office is immediately next to the area they were working in and none of the fumes ever came in.

Sometimes I do like the hands chance deals. :)

Reviews for the team have started. No raises are possible at this time but at least we should all know where we stand (possibly except me: as team lead, I may have to wait until the next time the VP is in the office, as the original plan was to have her present for that). I can survive. It's not like it's tied to my salary, and I'm sure I'd have heard if they really disliked the job I was doing. :) I'm just glad the rest of the team is getting reviews finally - some of them have been sort of uneasy about not knowing where they stand. Understandably.

Picked up a step-ladder on the way home. I also need a good full-size ladder. I'm trying to decide between 8 foot and 8-16 foot extension. The latter would be useful in all sorts of ways, but I'm not sure if it would be useful to reach the ledge in the entryway, which I also need to get to. (The step-ladder isn't tall enough for that, but will fit in our closet, where it will allow us to reach the upper ledges to store out-of-season clothes on. It sounded like a lovely idea.... Actually, this applies to various uses of upper shelves in all the closets on the upper floor.)

Now back to reading this book and seeing what more I can learn from it.... I really hope I don't learn that anything in the committed part of the design (from several months ago) is a mistake. That would be annoying.
