Actually, today is atypical. The tasks are coming slow enough that I feel busy, not frantic. But while that's atypical for the past 3-4 months, it's quickly becoming familiar again.

Of course, my definition of busy is interesting. Right now I am:

1. Compiling a fresh build of the base setup system, because I want to test for something that N. encountered at a site (namely, it takes 3-4 minutes to finally exit when shut down).

2. Installing the maintenance software on a server in another room. This task really should be done, but it's across non-trusting domains, and the server is presently choking on the whole concept. It will connect eventually - it does this every time - but meanwhile there are 40 million grouchy dialog boxes, each of which takes a while to appear, complaining that it's not familiar with that domain and can't find the proper server. I wander in every minute or two and kill another one.

3. Just finished taking N's call, of course.

4. Design work for the next portion of profiles I need to do, because if I just code it it will be spaghetti.

5. Email monitoring - none in right now, but have to check if they're important when they do come in.

6. Waiting for someone to arrive so we can begin the process of swapping her computer out (of course, this takes almost no effort, just a holding-pattern task).

7. Waiting for someone to arrive so I can ask him where the software CD he borrowed yesterday is, so that I can put it back in the set.

That's really not that many things, especially when the last three are purely waiting, the first one mostly requires none of my time, and the second one is just a nuisance.

But you see why I feel scattered sometimes? I can remember 7 items, most of which aren't highly "active". Two months ago, it was sometimes 10-15, half or more of which required me to be actively doing something. It's so nice not to feel like I'm the taffy in a taffy-pulling.
