Work today went well. Got a lot of reviews done, gave some answers to people with questions, did a couple tasks. I had to get an update to someone, which was complicated as my primary box for doing that is located in the office, and I had not prepared my laptop for doing those updates because, well, I didn't expect to need it! Fortunately, I was able to connect in to a box in the office (not the one I normally use, but who cares) and get what I needed.

I feel bad for a coworker - he is onsite in the middle of this storm mess, sick, and cannot drive home or be driven home (which would otherwise be fairly quick) as the roads are not clear enough. Poor guy.

Ah, yes, speaking of weather. I think it may have gone above freezing - we had thaw in the sunny areas, late in the afternoon. It was not even enough to bring the snow down off the roof, though, but it did let me get the remainder of the ice off Scott's windows and a bunch of it off his tires. (I did not bother with my car: the ice on it was much thicker and I hadn't a prayer without a lot more hard work, nor am I likely to be a happy person with trying to drive until the roads are better anyway.) But it did not really make a dent in the ground conditions I could see. I understand that it did for the freeways, allowing them to drive clear, more or less - alas, they were probably still wet, of course.

Because the temperature has gone back down. High of 43 and overnight low of 41 (yesterday's forecast for today) my backside! It's currently 30. They say the low tonight is to be 30. I am dubious. My neighbor is deicing his car in the hopes that he'll be able to deal with it in the morning and get out, which he failed to do today. I did my bit this afternoon. Scott will make it out, or he won't, but we have a chance of it being doable. I am staying put until the thaw clears off what is definitely at least a quarter-inch of ice on my car, layered over snow on all semi-flat surfaces (basically in a strip from front to back, of course).

Tomorrow is supposed to have a high of 46 and an overnight low tomorrow night of 41. Yeah, right. They keep raising the forecast temperatures, but the weather is not listening. My radio station said there was another storm front coming in on Friday. If it is still cold then, this will be a very memorable winter.

We used to have a few days like this most winters when I was young. And I loved it. And I love this. I am not so fond of it now that I know the driving involved, but we lived on a ridge and we pretty well holed up and stuck it out when this happened - as my parents are doing now, in fact. As I am doing, since I can do most of my work from home. Make no mistake, I am enjoying this and all the drama a great deal.

But it's really having a heck of an impact on other people, and a day or two of thaw to let everyone stock up and do critical stuff would be good. Not to mention to let all the poor people stranded at the Portland Airport get somewhere.

They had an exit ramp closed because of so many stalled semis on it, earlier. In the traffic report a couple hours ago, there was a semi on a sloping ramp - one of the ones up in the Terwilliger curves - that couldn't make it. So a tow truck (I assume with chains) had been sent to get it clear. Only at the top of the ramp, the tow truck could no longer make progress, so now they had a tow truck and semi blocking the ramp.... I did not hear any more of what happened with that, though.

We'll see. I'm enjoying the Pretty factor.

Also, the nap earlier helped muchly. I'm awake, alive, feeling good. Wandered out a bit ago as you can tell from some of the babble above, but no further than Scott's car, and only that far because I was curious how bad it was.
