You know, I think the holiday songs being played constantly on my radio station are influencing me. And this weekend the lights started going up.

On the one hand, I think that decorating your house and yard with large numbers of outdoor lights is an extravagance, one we should probably be ashamed of. There are far better ways to care for our resources than to throw away power like that on a display that - be honest! - for much of the time it is visible each day, no one is looking at. Not to mention the risks some people take in getting them up, and the effort always involved.

But it's hard to begrudge the fact that my neighbors are willing. The house next to me and the one down and across from it are stunning this year, so far. Up the side-street leading to the Wilsonville Road, one of the residents has gone for a tasteful blue-and-green theme that is not quite so...overwhelming...as the full lighted yard-and-house displays of the two nearer me. It's beautiful. I do love some parts of the holiday season.
