It is really pretty out there. There's snow in some areas, freezing rain in others. My 'easy' route to Newberg goes through Sherwood and Tualatin. The school districts in both have closed for the day. So has the school district where work is, the school district where I live, Newberg school district (which would be on snow routes if it was only bad up at the elevation of my parents' house - closed means it's bad down near the city, too), and everything in the vicinity of the town where I need to pick up Basta's shots appears to be closed too.
High in the mid-30s. I seriously doubt it will thaw out enough to go to most of the places I planned. There is a chance that mid-afternoon I can get to Newberg, and if it looks good I will, but only if it looks good. Otherwise I'll skip that and just do the local stuff. Snow day. I get to take photographs and play World of Warcraft (a lot of the to-do list can be done from home, but not so much that I won't get to play).
The road reports for the freeways don't actually look that bad but in this weather, if I didn't have the day off, I would work from home and not go into work because of the side streets. I'm pretty sure that means that going to Newberg (which, although I can do it almost entirely on highway/freeway, means going over Rex Hill at about ) is a bad idea. Oh, wow. Okay, the traffic reports online show no major issues. The verbal one on the radio tells me that the steady-no-accidents is steady at about 10 miles per hour. I don't think the freeway is in good shape either!
When I first saw it, my heart ached. This weather killed my Dad. It's hard to see. And then it hit me - first, I've always loved snow. Second, from the way he photographed it, either he loved it or he loved other people's love of it. And third, this didn't kill him. If the weather had been like this, he would probably not have gone, or would have gone with chains on very cautiously. Bad luck and borderline weather did, but not this.
I wish he could see it - I hope he can, from somewhere. I think he might like it, and if he didn't, I think he'd enjoy my love of it.
Scott called when he got to work to tell me that he was there safe (we normally email for that, smart man, as I would've called if I'd not had anything by not long after he called!), and also to tell me I probably didn't want to go anywhere today. I think he's right, unless the afternoon really does a number. (Though if it melts the snow and the roads are safe, I might dare to go to the library, locally.)
Happy birthday to me, I get a snow day!

Happy Birthday Laura
I remember my 20th birthday. I was having a fun party in Vancouver Wa but I had to go pick up my boyfriend at the time who was playing a gig down on Barbour Blvd. Then the ice storm hit (a little rain hit the ice cold pavement) That drive was hell, going over the bridges. A cop told me to drive where the debris was on the side of the lane and that was the only place there was any traction. Somehow I made it, and we stayed in a motel instead of coming back to Vancouver. This was most likely one week before you were born.
Re: Happy Birthday Laura
It is lovely. Absolutely gorgeous. Of course, "snow day" still includes a lot of the same to-do list but all the ones that required driving are off it. (I may put two back on if it clears enough for me to go down the main road into town. If it doesn't, Scott can do one of them on his way home if he's willing.)

Alas, I didn't get to have a snowball fight with Scott. And now it is dark. *sniffles*

Weds dining - actually, since I've verified that I have high sensitivity to both wheat and tomatoes, pizza is off my list completely, alas. Anytime after 5pm works fine for me (I expect to be done with my 3pm appt up at Sylvan by 4:30, latest), so if there's a good Elmers/Sharis/steak-and-ribs place that's reasonably close to your "orbit", that'd be good by me.
Btw, what is/are your favorite color/s?

Hmm. I am now unclear if I am going into work at all tomorrow since it may ice up. I need the allergy shots but if it's icy tomorrow and persists into early afternoon, I'll work from home. So hard to say where is best.
There's a Shari's in Wilsonville, actually, if that would work for you; I like their food just fine, so it would work for me. It's not too far from the freeway at the South Wilsonville exit (coming from Portland, hang a left, go through the light for I-5 north, and then hang a left - stay in teh right lane there - and Shari's will appear on your right shortly thereafter). We could aim for 5 or 5:30 and coordinate via phone if appropriate.
You have my cell number, right? I know I have your number (is that cell?).

Also, I just got the studded snow tires put on my car today, so I have traction-able transportation and could come collect you and return you home before heading south to Salem, if that would work better for you.

And depending on the weather, I may take you up on that. If it's clear, I can drive over - if not, we can talk on the cell and I can beg a ride? :) (It's the same exit, I'm just a couple miles further up the road past the high school.)

(Let me know if I need to get the WoW expansion, eh? ;) )

There was some compensation - any place I can call is, by now, closed, so I now have the evening to play, but I would have had that anyway. I really really didn't want a snow day. But I might as well enjoy the positive aspects of it, since we got one.

Happy Birthday!
A snow day would be an ideal birthday for me (minus the ice), but I understand needing to do lots of things and being hindered by the weather.
I'm glad you are having a REAL day off on Saturday -- enjoy your book. I just finished reading Hoffman's Spirits that Walk in Shadow, which you'd said you enjoyed. I did, too.
