Blog for Choice Day - January 22, 2007

I am pro-choice. I believe that, until we work out a viable way to neatly remove a child from one womb and implant them in either another or a functioning artificial womb, the welfare of the woman takes precedence. That said, I also believe we should do what we can to make this a world in which that option isn't needed or wanted, as much as we can figure out how. I don't want any woman to get an abortion again, because I don't want there to be any reason for them to want or need to. But since those reasons do exist (and in some degree, always will - we can reduce, but I doubt we can entirely remove), I believe the freedom to choose an abortion also should exist.

Note that I'm not commenting on the originating web-site: I have joined in a meme and have taken only the most cursory glance at the web site. The opinions expressed in this post are mine. The opinions expressed on the web site are someone else's, and I may or may not agree with any given one of them.

Personally I'm pro-life. But I vote for pro-choice candidates. Why? Because while I personally don't like the idea of abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or a danger to the woman's life, I also feel that as a man who can never get pregnant and never have to face this choice, its not my place to be telling a woman what she can or cannot do with her own body. That choice should be totally between her and her God(s), if any.

Also, in my opinion, it speaks volumes that over 70 percent of the members of "Right to Life" are men. And the most ridiculous thing there is on the topic is a Catholic priest who opposes abortion...that's like a fish opposing the exploration of other planets.
