There is a recall underway in the US of a large number of store brands of canned cat food, specifically cuts-in-gravy style, for both cats and dogs. They have received complaints of deaths from kidney failure. They haven't traced the cause despite testing, but they have found that it was timed with a change in a production ingredient, so it may well be involved.
The article is here on Yahoo, or just go to the page about the recall which includes the recall press release itself as well as the specific affected brands for cats and dogs.
(Fortunately, we spoil ours, and anyway they get pate-style due to Basta's lack of teeth. Still, yikes.)

Fortunately, it does not appear to affect the dry food or the specific type of canned they get (they get "chunk", the recall is apparently only for "sliced").
However, by coincidence I need to restock since I'm down to 5 cans of dog and 7 cans of cat (I try to always keep at least 20 cans on hand). And I think for this round we will be buying a different brand until the dust settles and facts are known.

It scared me for an instant, till I read the 'house brands' thing - I buy Science Diet, Iams, and (for the ferals at my parents' house) Friskies, so...that made me relax a bit. Still very scary and I wanted to spread the info as far as possible, since if it were a food I bought my cats, I would want to know asap.
Nasty. I wonder what actually caused it, and if they'll figure it out.
