The final book in Trudi Canavan's Age of the Five trilogy. I can still recommend these books and this series. Definitely high fantasy.
Other comments, minor spoilerage:
First, I predicted the "shock" part of the ending by the end of the second book. But it made a great deal of sense that the characters did not, and it didn't damage the story for me.
Second, wow, this was harsher than I thought and left me wanting to cry. (The reason for that? Also obvious to the reader before it became obvious to the character it hit, and totally made sense - again - that it would be missed.)
Ow. Good book, but I think I sprained something reading the ending.
