So, it's about 8:15 or so and I haven't been up for a full hour (though I've at least been up and had breakfast), when I hear this noise outside. And I'm sitting there going "I can't believe my neighbors are using what sounds like a power-washer at this hour on a Sunday!" I'm all set to go out and suggest it's a bit early for noisy power tools. I go to the window and peer to see if I can tell which neighbor is doing what....

...and find myself staring at a hot air balloon floating along the tree line. I was listening to it, not a rude neighbor. They went out for a Sunday morning rent-a-ride and were trying to land, but the wind ran them along the trees that line the creek instead of into the adjacent pastures. So, they waited a bit hoping, but finally gave up and pushed higher and disappeared north, still in search of a chance to drift the right direction. Before they went up, they scraped the top branches of one tree with the basket (you could hear it and see the flexion, but they only scraped, I think). The girls on the ride were giggly and a touch nervous at that point but the operator either wasn't worried or had a good poker face.

I grabbed my camera, of course. So there are a few pictures. I was staring and chatting with them as much as I was photographing, though.

As usual, pictures link to bigger pics.

Oh, sure. I live in Albuquerque, home to the largest balloon festival in North America, and *you* get to see balloons this morning!

The Fiesta started yesterday, and supposedly there was a decent launch yesterday, but we only saw 2 balloons on the way to work yesterday. The Glow was cancelled due to rain last night, and this morning's launch suffered the same fate. I WANNA SEE THE DARTH VADER BALLOON!

Honestly, somewhere around 1/3 to 1/2 of the events get cancelled every year for weather. It's just the nature of the time of year that the fiesta needs and the fact that rain and balloon envelopes should NOT meet.

The first morning I ever woke up in California, I had THE EXACT SAME EXPERIENCE!!!

I was in a motel and heard this godawful noise at the crack of dawn and I thought 'this state just sucks!' and then I opened my eyes and I did not even have to move from the bed to see the balloon.

It was magic!!! It ended up that I saw many while I lived there and got a thrill every time.

This reminds me of Napa Valley which I consider home since I was born and raised there and spent a good number of years living there off and on.

Lots of hot air balloons every weekend and the dog would run back and forth in the yard trying to chase them.

Cool! I love watching hot air baloons. Someday I want to go up in one.
