Well, first days back at work always are, aren't they? Lots of stuff to catch up on, including complaints about one of my employees who was apparently generally flutter-braining. I need to look into that, and so far, the code he checked in isn't impressing me either. Not good.
Good time for a vacation: first Thursday I was out, they said that everyone had to work 8 hours that weekend, mandatory. But I was on vacation when it was announced, on vacation when it happened, on vacation for a week after that. Hee!
Of course, I may catch up anyway. Put in a 10 hour day today. Lots of stuff to get done. But - it's frustrating, some of it, but I came out of it awake and alert and not de-energized. Between not being sick (as I still was, my last workday before vacation, though not as bad as earlier that week), having had a nice restful vacation, and having decided to ditch the remains of my Spanish class, I think I can deal with all of this. Which is a really cool feeling.
I got no code done, of course. I was still trying to do code validation when I headed out. Eek. But tomorrow I may manage it. May not, as the new (new, 3 months ago-ish?) VP for my division is in. There'll be a (mandatory for my division, optional for others) meeting at 9:30, and then he'll be meeting individually with others after, so I should still be able to get a fair amount of work done, I figure. So I should finish code validation and basic testing, and be able to toss a compile to our tester. Yay, compiles. Yay, chaos. Oh, wait. *grins*
I also helped N., speaking of testers, get her new laptop set up. She mostly had it - she got it Tuesday last week and played a bit over the holiday weekend - but she couldn't get it on the proper domain. They wouldn't authorize her to add it - I was able to SWITCH domains, but she couldn't easily switch back, without my using the password I know for an account with administrative privileges - what can I say? Our support personnel like me (or like me to shut up and go away). I know the password to beat on and even uninstall the virus scanning software (after it caused problems on my laptop a while ago and a clean-and-reinstall was needed - password is still good, hee!), and I know an account (not an obvious one, granted) with administrative privileges for the company domain.
Then again, the only time I've used the former was when the antivirus was acting up and I needed to repair it, and the only time I've used the latter was (a) when the domain controller needed to be tweaked to work right and (b) when N's computer needed to be placed back into the main domain.
Come on, guys, make the whole bloody network play nice with everything, already. Better still, perhaps my boss would like to accept the dictate that we have to be on the company's main domain, and move our office over en masse. The problem is, he controls the server with the source safe (which needs us on the office domain so long as it is), and he does the backups (which he can only do for machines in the office domain). So....
I got to work about 7:30, I left just shy of 6:00. I don't have the pager until Friday, so Scott and I went to Powell's tonight. That was really cool. We had McDonald's for dinner, and then he drove - we got to park in the lot across the street, that's free in the evenings/after the shops that use it close down. So no need for the parking garage. Like we didn't already own too many books, but oh, it was so much fun going through everything there, looking, sometimes keeping. *bounces* I don't enjoy most shopping all that much, most of the time, but an occasional bookstore binge, in the right mood? Well...yeah. Very much so. Hee.
I almost bought another journal - it had a squirrel on it and he was soooo cute. But it was hardbound, lined, and $20. He wasn't quite that cute, I fear. Much as I like squirrels, he wasn't that cute. *grins*
I'm learning my way around Portland. I mostly knew where we were and where we had to be better than Scott. *grins* I also know the rule about Burnside from Powell's to Front: get into the right lane, and be read to turn early, because it turns into a bridge and never meets Front.... *chuckles* First time I went that way, I totally forgot there is "The Burnside Bridge" (you'd think that would be a big clue!) and boy was I at a loss for what to do when I ended up on it!
I'm home, I'm alive, I'm fed, I have books. I'm awake, I'm happy, I'm hyper (does that surprise anyone still reading this?). It's been a good day.
