I got up early this morning and was really organized (don't ask me why, I have no clue), so I left around 7. I love it when that happens, because the drive is very nice at that time of morning. The right lane at 205 isn't the kiss of death (but it's pointless, because come the Tualatin-Sherwood exit, it gets kind of jammed up).
Yesterday morning, travelling at my regular time, I saw the usual phenomenon: where the 205 exit leaves I-5, the traffic in the left and center lanes bunches up. Right past the I-205 exit, the right lane is almost clear, because everyone exited. People duck right and pass everyone on the right - they are doing maybe 45 and you're doing 20-25 in packed traffic.
They gain a quarter mile or so real quickly. But this is where poetic justice comes in, because then the ramp from 205 to I-5 comes in. It takes the left two lanes a while to get there, but in the space of 200-300 feet, you pass almost everyone who passed you, and not a few who passed folks ahead of you.
A few smart ones duck out and then duck back in when the backup starts, but they're not always given the best merging opportunities by the folks who've stuck it out. I don't understand why people are always doing this - now or then, yes, if they're from out of town or not used to this route. But it's chronic, it's tons of people, and the result (at that hour) is always the same.
It's quite humorous.
As I was driving toward I-5 this morning, there were dark clouds to the west, and bright sun behind me. So I'm looking at sun off of everything, brilliantly green grass, reflecting windows, everything like a painting, bright, so bright.... And behind it, this wall of dark blue-grey. Not ominous; glorious, the perfect backdrop for such a day.
Of course, outside my window now, I have bright blue sky in the upper part and mottled white and pale grey clouds down near the horizon. It's kind of a let-down after the drama earlier, in all honesty, but I suppose it's pretty enough.
Now to update some settings.
