...my new hire started! Yay, finishing the red tape part and getting into the training part. He's picking up standards very quickly, which is good. It means I can stop boring him to tears and start showing him the user side of the system way, way quick. This is so good.

We lost database connection at a site. This is not good. It's a pre-live site in internal testing, however, which is about the best place for it to happen. And it turns out to be a cause that's known to another team, who handed me their code for solving it. I adapted it to our environment, and we'll see how it does tomorrow (as I did that this evening, the whole problem having come totally clear at about 4:30, argh - if I'd understood sooner I might've been able to get far enough to test it today, but such is life). I replaced a complex function that would be hard to reproduce (and is inextractable from their environment) with a very simple test. (They were using an existing wildcard test. I needed to see if a line started with something. Remove asterisk, make truncated copy of line, compare. End of problem.)

I've listened to the Jill Sobule "Happy Town" CD again. I hated it when it first came out, for all sorts of reasons. I like some of the songs now, and others not. I don't think I'd pay the price for the CD even now if I knew, but hey, at least I like some of it.

The bad side of the balance is the physical. I've had allergies/sinus all day and now I have a headache, but not a sinus one (no, I took a decongestant, so it had to resort to some sort of tensiony thing). Hopefully the tylenol will whap that down in a bit. And, because N started today, I moved a monitor over to his desk.

Mmmm. Next time, I will play the helpless little girl that I am, and let somebody stronger and larger than me move the 21" monitor. I got it there, and I didn't strain anything, but as I was making the transfer from the cart to the desk, it slipped and I smacked myself in the leg with a rather large monitor. Ah, well. It only hurts at all (and not too bad) when I poke it, so I think that falls in the "then don't poke it!" category.
