Heat. Sucks.

So, we moved the AC to the bedroom. Really, really good move. Last night I slept comfortably, and you have no idea how amazingly novel that was to me. No middle-of-the-night allergy attacks. No 'too hot for words' awakening. I did have to stir and pull another blanket on at one point. Bliss!

However. That meant no AC in the computer room. My laptop spotaneously shut down from the heat at one point. (I really wish we'd bought another portable AC when they were on sale. I may just buy another anyway.) By 8, I had gone into the bedroom (shutting my laptop off first), and I really wish I'd gone earlier. I had a hot pocket with cheese for dinner, and a cookie, and I did have the pill for the cheese but I guess it wasn't enough, coupled with the heat, so I spent a couple hours feeling lousy indeed...though it got markedly worse whenever I left the AC zone for the hallway, so...yeah.

There's no net in the bedroom. There's no way to get net in the bedroom, without running a long cable down the hall or adding wireless (and none of our computers have wireless right now), and there's no way to get my other computer tools in there either. Else, I'd be in there, and that would be the answer. As it is...feh. Not a happy Laura.

Yesterday at work was chaotic, but things got done, and that's no bad thing. I stopped for my favorite sorbet on the way home (Haagen-Dasz lemon) at yet another store. It was on sale and they were out. Third store this week. First two were in Wilsonville, so I figured rivalry. This one wasn't. But they checked the label and it's not a discontinuation of the item, just a manufacturer's promotion. I hate their fucking promotion. Ahem. Sorry. But that stuff is summer heaven, lemonade in ice form, perfect. And I can't get any of it.

Sigh. Grrrrr. On the other hand, I stopped off at Fry's and got a USB 2 card for the laptop finally. The jury is still out on this one. It installed fine and it appears to work, but it "lost" one of my drives (which are not powered through it - they have their own power supply) partway through, but my laptop shut down due to overheating shortly there after, so, no idea. When I tried to start this morning, I got a blank screen instead of Windows sign-on. Restarting with the card out fixed that, so - rule one, don't leave the stupid thing in while shutting down, I guess! :)

Jury's still out. But it was cheaper than I'd hoped (online research had turned up prices about $15 higher than this). With luck, it'll work fine once the "heat" issue is resolved.

It's too hot in the computer room already. Even though Scott left the fan on and windows open all night. I'm going to work. Feh.

I did go to Fry's, but I can't bring myself to pay $500 for an air conditioner that, had I bought it on sale, it or its equivalent would have been $300. Just can't make myself do it. Especially not as they kindly put the window-mount ACs for only $200 next to those....

I look at them, and I think, maybe the downstairs windows - if the screens are removable, they're low enough to get them off and do the living room. And then I remember that this week, if the painters stay on top of things, we're getting our house painted. Bad time to put in window-mount AC, really. Well, then, next week when they're done. Except, by then, the temps will be back down again, so maybe I don't need these and in any case I shouldn't buy till I can confirm the screen removability, window size, etc.....

And I walked back out. Even tonight is not as bad as last night was. I will likely still retreat to the bedroom, tho'. Eesh. It's nice and cool in there. And I don't want to eat in this heat, not after last night. But, first things first. Need to go through the journalling book so I can take those back to the library and get whatever-the-heck is waiting for me now, if anything. Then home and AC and dinner and, if I'm feeling okay, come back when it's cooler and play with the new USB card.
