I have a confession to make. (Well, it's hardly news to my parents, who have seen it, but....) My back yard is a disaster.
Now, this is hardly news. When we bought the house, the back yard was a barren bit of dirt, rocks, and weeds. And I knew, and said, I wasn't going to clean it up and plant good things there this year because I didn't have time.
But in all the time we have had the house, I have never even gotten out there to beat back the weeds. I was madly busy through the end of June. And in early July, I stepped out onto the deck, surveyed the work waiting for me....
...and said "eep" in a tone of voice that should have set dogs barking, and went back indoors to hide.
Right. It's now August. My back yard looks, oddly enough, like it's been growing weeds all summer. They've gone to seed, though many of them haven't completed the process. Ugh.
I just spent half an hour or an hour out there, cutting them back. The yard debris container is almost full. On the one hand, I feel good that I've done so. On the other? It will take 3-5 more sessions like that to clean this mess completely up, I think. One more will improve the view from the living room windows, though.
Ending time was dictated by, "Gee, I'm starting to get a headache - and my back itches where that stuff hit me." I hate allergies, I really do. Milkweed, grass, and dandelion, however, love my allergies. Or at least setting 'em off.
On the plus side, while I was first working, I heard a crackling in the blackberries on the far side of the stream. So I looked up - and saw a racoon, sitting there boldly, staring back at me. He was there every time I looked up for about 5 minutes or so, I think; then I didn't look for a while dealing with a large plant, and the next time I glanced he was gone.
If I can get all this cleaned up this year, next year I can yank the weeds before they get this big. And plant something I want to grow there - quick before I end up in this state again. Aie.
