...why a few people I know or who post in communities I follow seem to be using some sort of text for their username that is either foreign or garbage, because my system can't render it. Mostly I'm curious because it throws spacing to heck in a handbasket on comment pages: the icon for user and community links appears atop the linked name of the journal....

Oh, and if I highlight the name with my mouse, spaces appear between the white boxes.

I've got my encoding set right for my machine, but I wonder what font I don't have. Either that or they're trying to be a pain inna neck. :)

As have I. I can read those. And these are native English speakers who used to have English names. I'm a bit boggled and lost, basically.

And if I knew what font to install to make it stop screwing up comments pages, I would be SO glad to install it. If there is one.

(numerical position in your friends list in profile view is a useful identification system, I think)

Thanks for the pointer to the right language set. I -do- wonder why without the right font, it can't render it as something less offensive (say, little blank squares that DON'T resize or screw up the spacing of other words), but then, this is IE. :P
