I'm feeling a lot better about ViaVoice now. I went ahead and hooked it up to my favorite USB microphone, and things didn't get any better at all. So I brought up the audio Control Center, and it said my sound quality was execrable. Well OK it said "poor ", but execrable's close enough. It's still not getting all my words right. In fact, it's getting a great many of them wrong. But it is getting the general intent, and it was able to dictate into another program the way I wanted it to, even if the words weren't quite correct yet.

Basically, it looks like I can't use my USB hub with my USB microphone without taking the sound quality through the floor, to the point where it's just as bad as the shoddy microphone that came with this product. But as long as I used the USB microphone directly, without other devices attached, it seems to do just fine. Well, mostly fine. There are definitely some bizarre artifacts in what it's writing here, but the more I dictate into it and the more I correct it, the more things it's getting right or at least offering me the correct answer for the first pick on.

I don't think I'm going to play with this too intensely for very much longer tonight, because I came home from work early and wasn't feeling all that great. My sinuses were acting up, and they still are, and my back is being a pain. I didn't have to be able to think very well in order to speak at this thing, and since I could very well blame problems on the fact I'm tired and out of it, it was possible that I'd manage not to get frustrated. I think most of the not getting frustrated is, however, more to the credit of my having had time to get used to the idea that it's not going to work perfectly than to anything else. I am capable of getting the point before its jammed into my face--sometimes.

I can at least browse the Web using this now. It's a beginning.
