For paid users, you can add RSS feeds to your friends list. So I've added a couple (comics I read - ![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-syndicated.gif)
dilbertdaily and kevinkell). I'm vaguely tempted by some of the news feeds, except for the entertaining part where too many sites (LJ included, in fact!) put out just a title and a link.
I don't enjoy following that many links, and the titles are almost invariably crap for figuring out if you want to read it. That leavesslashdot right out, and theregister as well, though they do put in summaries. They're just stupid summaries. Ahem, well, okay, that's my opinion.
At some point when I have the time, I may poke around at a few other sites I enjoy and see if I could add them to my friends page.
