So how bad is the flooding and other effects here, anyway? It's been pouring pretty steadily (but is supposed to taper off tonight; tomorrow should be better - which is unfortunate in that tomorrow is my first chance to 'sightsee' but is a very good thing other than that). We have a flood advisory. We had 2-5 inches of rain (depending on observation area and observers) at 4 pm. (We had over an inch of rain by 8 am, so I suspect the 3-inch range is closer, at least for this area. That's still a lot of rain.) Courtesy of Yahoo weather: "...The Urban and small stream flood advisory has been extended until midnight...(12 AM saturday)..."

Up in Camas (just north of the Washington border), a hillside came down on a garage, prompting evacuation of five homes (no injuries, fortunately).

We've had various road closures (though not at the spot I avoided on the way home, apparently). A preschool had a moat, thanks to a clogged drain. How about water flowing over a street so strongly it had whitecap waves?

There are some pictures up, for however long they stay there. I hadn't realized it was quite that brutal already in some areas, until I saw those. Feels like a few old familiar times.... (Hey, Mom, Dad - is Dopp flooded and annoying? Seems the sort of weather for it....) Some of those pictures are from Tillamook, down by the coast. I swear, that place floods the fastest.... Yick.

I don't know what it is I love about this weather, or why, but I remember as a child riding in the car as my parents drove down Dopp while it was flooded. The water was high enough in some cases that they had to be careful of the engine, and in others was not as high but still presented driving problems. And I was laughing, and saying "whee!" while they were white-knuckled, and (when it was not so deep, or came unexpected) watching it rise up in great white wings to either side of the car....

I don't know what it is that makes me love the water so much that I love the flooding even as I wish it could happen without damage. But I do. And I love the rain. Except for not being able to be out in it, today was absolutely glorious.

No, Dopp isn't particularly bad. Part of that is that they have been fairly active in cleaning out the most troublesome ditches over the past several years. So there was the usual water to drive through at the base of Calkins and a few over-the-road puddles along Dopp, but no real problems.
