No, seriously, they are developing them and are moving on to testing them on brain tissue from rats (not yet on living rats, but that's in the works along with a full testing plan).

A prosthetic that can stand in for part of the brain. It's a boggling concept, and it raises all sorts of ethics and paranoia questions. I think it's potentially very good, but imagine what a bug could do....

Imagine people getting implants to extend the normal capabilities of the brain. Imagine implanting pre-learned skills and false memories. It could be the stuff of science fiction.

More than that, there's science-fiction -- and speculative science -- that wonders what would happen if you gradually replaced your entire brain, making sure you've got continuity of consciousness the entire way. If you could manage it, your brain could be immortal... or, some critics say, you'd have been replaced by a robot that thinks its you. Either way, heady stuff.
