Ahem. Almost forgot to type this piece. On the way home, we were to the closest exit to our house (along that freeway) and Scott was still in the left lane. So I asked about this and he got over, took the exit, then said he preferred to take the freeway closer to town to avoid the backroads when he was tired, especially as he might encounter animals in the dark. (We can get closer to our house by continuing to I-5 and going south to some other exits, a matter of an extra 2-3 miles, which would then have us driving mostly through town.)

I said I wouldn't have asked him to get off there if I'd known that and he was welcome to ignore me if he thought I was being a twit, in the future, but also that I didn't think animals were that likely to be a problem.

I was envisioning cats and dogs. We had a Holstein step into the road less than a mile after that. Fortunately, it came up from the opposite side and there was another car coming (who had just come out of a curve, was slow, and stopped in time) so Scott had lots of warning and we stopped in plenty of time.

A few honks and she wandered back off the road; we could see another down there.

Um.

Thank you, universe, for the irony.

There is this: we were definitely more awake after that!
