Dad stopped by yesterday to drop off leftovers from their Thanksgiving meal - garlic potatoes, gravy, and purple chicken (coq au vin, but I still like purple chicken better). They were delicious. (Thank you, mom and dad!) Mom didn't stop by with him because she wasn't feeling well - I missed seeing her and I hope she's feeling better.

Dad also dropped off copies of backups (off-site backups for their computers). I'll have to find some place to put them where I can find them again later. The odds of their being needed is not that large, but it would be embarrassing if they were and I couldn't find them, which is the usual state of things around here. I think the shelf above my laptop, next to the external DVD-RW and hard drive, is a likely spot. Dad also dropped off a book called "The Gallery of Regrettable Food". It is regrettable, and rather bemusing.

Finished Lindskold's The Pipes of Orpheus - if you call skim-reading finishing. Disappointing for a Lindskold book; fascinating concept, weakly told, and with additional complications added (as far as I could tell) just so she could cram a second tale in and thus make it novel-length instead of short-story-length. It felt forced and grafted together, and I never cared much about the main characters, though I was curious enough about the story to keep on to the end.

Have returned the mostly-disappointing stack of books (Trader the only one that wasn't) to the library, and picked up the two Donna Andrews books that were on hold to see what I think of her. I actually fully expect to be disappointed by these - from the website excerpts and whatnot, I do not think her style will suit me. And yet, I somewhat liked the short story by her in Powers of Detection (an anthology that is, alas, not forgettable due to how badly large parts of it suck - but which I was drawn to because of an Anne Bishop story in there that is tolerably fun if you happen to have already read her other books and thus care about the characters, and would otherwise be quite unrewarding). So I'm checking out her books - one from each of the two series - and we shall see.

I've got four more in transit right now, so I shan't be bored long if I don't care for these. I'll be lucky to get to The Sun Sword any time soon at this rate. The problem with books you own is, they're always there, so they can be put off...and often are.
