We did the real tree thing for several years, finally giving it up when we moved to the northwest and had to pay for the tree and the disposal once we killed it. (Alas, no luck at replanting) The artificial tree becomes a family project, lining up the branches in alphabetical order. There's no pine scent, but there's also no dropped needles or constant watering.... so it's not that bad.
