So much for clam chowder in the crockpot. First it was a pain to make, second the instructions apparently assume 'high' is a lot higher than it is, since I didn't exactly get it cooked when it was supposed to be, and thirdly, the result is disgusting. I halved the onion input and it's still too freaking oniony. It tastes like onion soup, with no clam aspect.

I hate cooking. The only excuse for having to cook is getting to eat something I want at the end of it (such as clam chowder - I can't buy it, because I need it made with lactose free milk; the pills are not enough with standard chowder). So getting to the end of all that effort and mess with something I can't stand is just...reminding me why I just stop eating things I can't buy ready-made in some acceptable format. I hate cooking when it produces results; when it doesn't, I'm so frustrated I can hardly stand to think about it. I wasted time on this crap today, and I wish I had never even heard of the recipe.

But, I don't have to worry about whether it reheats okay, or whether you can freeze and reheat it. (If the recipe had been good, those would have been the next questions - and with clam chowder, I suspect the answers would have been no, which would ALSO have annoyed me. Though that would be better than having this much inedible ick.)

Sorry. That has to be incredibly disappointing.

Can you send me the recipe you started from? Julie would also like one that works, so I might experiment.

Bummer. It's no fun putting that kind of effort into something and not be able to enjoy the resulting product. I made clam chowder once and it came out pretty good but was way too much work. It's too easy to buy good clam chowder around here.

Do you think the lactose free milk had anyting to do with it?

That sounds like a strange recipe. There should be some onion in the chowder but not enough to over power it like that. What else is in it?

What kind of onions? Did you use sweet (Vidalia) or yellow?

I like to cook but don't get much opportunity to lately. It interests me.

The sweet onions have a much less oniony flavor and they might work better in this. I tend to use them in things where I don't want the onion to be overpowering and they are especially good raw in salads. In things like spaghetti sauce I use yellow onion because otherwise you wouldn't taste it at all.
