Okay. I understand being upset about the LiveJournal outages of the past few days. I was rather irked myself, especially when it extended to the point that I had trouble posting.

But that doesn't mean I thought it deserved attacking the site maintainers.

Yes, LiveJournal is a business. And yes, the site performance has been pretty bad lately, even if you're a paid member, and execrable if you're a free member.

I spend a lot of my time programming. It's my job. And I'll tell you, it takes time to fix technical problems. I'm fairly confident that Brad and everyone else wanted these problems fixed even more than we did. Because as long as the problems were present, they were struggling to get them fixed, knowing their users were disappointed or angry.

Do you have any clue how childish you looked, those of you who went to the Support page to log a lot of swear words all in capital letters? I'm amazed at how many six-year-olds we must have on this site, because that was the level of self-control and thoughtfulness displayed...at BEST. I picked six-year-olds only because your average three-year-old can't read and type well enough.

It is not possible to magically fix load problems. It is sometimes possible, as they have done, to slowly improve the situation. But the ultimate fix for heavy load is more servers.

And for those of you who suggested that LiveJournal is just sitting on a cash cow...pardon me while I laugh hysterically. $2.50 a month is so far from being a cash cow it's an absolute joke. It's a lot better than free, as far as giving them enough money to do stuff - but that's about it. It's not enough to make them a magically good site.

And swearing at and name-calling your programmers, especially on a mostly-volunteer site which is run by these people because they love it, is a good way to make their performance worse. Being constantly under attack is disheartening, and no matter how hard you try, everything's a bit more difficult when your mood is dimmed.

If you have to vent about the site - and goodness knows I did vent about it! - do it to your friends. Or in your journal. Save support for actual new issues that you haven't seen addressed, which they might not KNOW about. It is not your private playground to tutor the rest of us on swear-words.

And please, if you hate it that much, do what you're threatening. Don't say you're going to go to another service - do. I wish you all the best of luck, finding one that will stay afloat and doesn't drive you nuts with bad performance and/or popup or banner ads. (Some manage a staggering combination of all of the above.)

And for all those of you with unpaid accounts bitching about paying for something that stinks...you know, I totally sympathize. Except (a) it doesn't stink when you pay, and (b) if you hate it that much, why waste bandwidth, disk space, and time to bitch about it? Just leave. Please.
