I don't think I can agree to the new LJ user agreement. It is subject to Russian law, the translation to English isn't binding and I don't read Russian so I'm reliant on translation, it allows them to email advertisements to me (!), and they can change it any time they want without notice and the changes instantly apply the next time you use the site.

I don't think I have much of interest to the Russian government. But *anyone still breathing* is of interest to advertisers - and possibly some people who aren't - and I trust these folks about as far as I can throw their entire country.

I wish I had a way, without accepting the agreement, to post. I'm told cross-posting won't work until you accept, but I'm going to try.

I hate to leave behind the folks I only see on LJ, who don't mostly post public. (The ones who do post public, I can still follow, and decide if I want to comment.) But I also really, really can't stay any longer. I'm rather regretting not leaving when they moved the servers, but at the time, I weighed the issues and wanted to stay with the people there.

ETA: Alas, as expected, this can't cross-post. At least it will hopefully be visible here for anyone who looks?

I am not bailing on LiveJournal. I don't love where their servers are, but I also don't think that Russia is likely to have any interest in my parenting or my cats or whatever. :P

However, this weekend for a while, LJ had blocked all the Dreamwidth servers from accessing their site, which blocked the Dreamwidth integrated cross-posting.

Which is what I use to post on LJ. I read and comment directly there when I do, but I post from DW.

So, since we don't know if that might happen again - if you're on LJ but _also_ active on DW, and you haven't already, you should probably add me on DW since that's my "posting home" and the posts are guaranteed to show up there.

If you're not on DW, don't worry - I will still cross-post and read there, I'm not telling you to go to DW - I'm just letting you know that if cross-posting fails, some things may go missing for a little bit.

But they're not becoming Facebook. No really.

Luckily, I don't think most people care about that 'feature', and I pay no attention to what's there anyway, but ... wow.

Okay, so there's a meme going around. You give me questions/things to write about, and I write about one a day.

...let me know when you've finished laughing hysterically, because yes, that's not feasible. However, if you give me things to talk about, I will pick off *at least* one per week and will *try* to pick off more.

Answers will come in the form of general posts to my journal, but a link to that post will be added in reply to the comment with the question.

Caveat: I will ignore/non-answer those I'm not comfortable with, but, I'll leave a comment that I did so.

[Intro posted today, because I think I've figured out how this will work. Actual first such post, coming Friday. Sing out if you have input or (would have) wanted to ask for a different venue and didn't have time/see the earlier post!]

So, [personal profile] jenett is doing salon threads in her Dreamwidth account. Basically, get together and chat. If you're curious, have the FAQ for it.

I'm tempted to do the same or similar. Question is, would you participate if I did that and the topics I seeded it with, or the digressions others took it to, were of interest to you?

1) If I did it with comments open only on Dreamwidth? (OpenId and anonymous could be used to comment, remembering that any LiveJournal user can auth as OpenId there.)

2) If I did it with comments open only on LiveJournal? (OpenId, anonymous, Facebook, Twitter, Google, all could be used to comment. As well as a couple more services, but I think they're more common in Russia.)

I wouldn't want to leave comments open on both, because the idea is to create a set of discussions people can mix and mingle through, which is easier if they are all in one space.

I'm not sure I have the time or brain for this. I'm *quite* sure I don't have it this week, so now is a good time to ask y'all if it's worth trying to figure out if I can do it.

Probable day for starting them: Friday morning (Pacific time), because that's my usual day for things that need brain and typing time.

Is this of any interest to you? Please let me know.

I have a little ten-second clip of vibrating baby snore/sighs, tribble baby style. However, I don't maintain my own web site or servers, and have no idea where or how I could upload it. (Well, a few searches turned up a pay site, but I think $5/month is a bit much to pay for something I almost never do....) Anyone know a place to do this that I am not aware of? (It wouldn't be hard....)

Alas. I sent a copy to Aunt Julia, though, and she replied about how cute they were, so. :)

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] nt for reminding me that Dropbox has a public folder. I'll get the file up in a bit.

Some of my friends on LiveJournal are moving to use Dreamwidth in addition to, or in place of, LiveJournal.

If you are one of them, I am also [personal profile] kyrielle on Dreamwidth, and I would love to know who you are there. Especially if you are cross-posting all material or if you are posting material on Dreamwidth that is not appearing on LiveJournal.

Also, if you are doing this or are contemplating it, and haven't already found it, Dreamwidth's FAQ section includes a guide to Dreamwidth for LiveJournal users.

I went to my journal page and saw the spam-a-thon of twitter entries, and just...ugh. I'm on Twitter as kyrielle if you want to follow me or whatever, but I've stopped syndicating those here.

Which means this area will be quiet, not because I don't WANT to post - but because I don't have much time with a proper-sized keyboard, and anything longer than a tweet is really kind of a pain on the phone keyboard.

I will post when I can, but - expect me to be somewhat quiet, alas.

We're all doing well. Drew is cute. Work is good. The cats are cuddly and at times strange (in other words, they're cats). And I occasionally take photos and upload them at Flickr. (The uploading is more occasional than the taking.)

If you have accounts on both Dreamwidth and LiveJournal, and I friend you on LJ, and we have mutual access on Dreamwidth, and you post the same things to both accounts (as I do), I have adjusted my settings on LJ so you are not in my default view. You'll still have the same access to my stuff on LJ if you want to comment there, I just get confused trying to figure out where I last read when I'm seeing the same posts two places. :) But that does mean that if you see I've "caught up" with LJ and not responded to you, it may not mean much. (OTOH, I read Dreamwidth more frequently, because my list of things to read there is much smaller...so probably a non-issue for you anyway.)

Right. Now that that's done and the hot chocolate is almost gone, back to wrapping things that should have shipped LAST week. Well, I had a hideously vile cold. Now I have a normally vile cold and am actually able to do this task, rather than wanting to spend all my spare time napping, so this is probably a better time even if it is likely some will arrive late.

I read back as far on LJ entries as I could, shortly after I posted the "argh, I'm behind" post. And have read from there forward. But...it turns out it'd been longer than I thought since I read, and after getting to skip=500, I couldn't go back any further. So if you have news/info/commentary that you thought I'd respond to and I haven't - I may not have seen it.

I will try to actually read at least once a week in the future, preferably more often. I don't promise I'll succeed, but I'll try.

And hopefully soon the antibiotics I got today will have managed to knock back this sinus infection enough for me to feel better.

I swear I used to actually write entries. With content.

These days I don't. I miss it. I miss the communication, the comments, the crafting of a thought more articulate than a tweet.

But I lack the time. Something has to give. And it seems, these days, to be the journal. :/ I miss it. I'll try to do a little better - but I have more stuff to put in the non-work hours these days. Meh.

And for those of you who wonder why I perpetually reply to things three weeks old...mea culpa. I read LJ/Dreamwidth in big gulp marathons when I can. :/

A manual twitter catchup. Then in theory Twittinesis will start sending them.... (And yes, I've decided not to have LJ cross-post to Twitter even tho I could, because that would be too bloody recursive. I do put stuff on Twitter I don't put here due to laziness, tho, and occasionally I manually link here on Twitter, so this may result in some Tweets about posts showing up in the daily gathering of them. Sorry.)

They didn't respond as quickly as I might have expected, but LJ has announced in the latest news post that with the next code push, Facebook/Twitter integration will no longer be able to publish comments made on protected posts. Which, honestly, addresses the only security issue I really saw there. It no longer encourages (accidentally) dissemination of protected information (the existence of the post, anything quoted or implied in the comment).

I might even use the Twitter integration, since a misclick / mistab will no longer be likely to send something I didn't intend. I'm debating, though - most of the people who want to read my LJ who read Twitter DO already read it. So I also may not.

But honestly, the real win? The giggle-worthy image at the bottom of the news post. Because, yes, the launch did hit them in the face, but that picture's...just great. And the fact that they shared it? Win.

I see a lot of people getting angrier, because they took so long to respond, and because they're not giving journal owners a way to block posting comments from public entries. I understand it's important to those people, but it's not important to me...public entries are, well, public. The social convention of the 'net is that linking to them with commentary is fine, which is what this tool allows.

I'm actually feeling a lot better about LiveJournal since they have addressed the issue I had with it. And if a week isn't superfast...it's not a bad response time, either, especially with a holiday weekend in the middle.

So I once created an account on Vox to test it out (hey, I'm a beta tester!). And then I was pretty sure I never used it. Pretty sure, but not completely sure. So tonight I retrieved the password and connected in to be sure there was no non-public-visible data there that I might want. Indeed, there was no data, basically.

Good.

The amusement factor? Is that at the top of the page I signed into was a big announcement about how they're shutting down and what my options are to get my content out, and how they're not accepting new registrations....

...and at the bottom was a couple paragraphs exhorting me to invite/recruit all my friends, acquaintances, pets, and dust bunnies.

Heh.

If you are using the new Facebook or Twitter connect to LJ, please be careful what you do with tickyboxes on comments. Those boxes are a little easy to accidentally tick, and you can (although it won't by default be on, at least) cross-post your comments to FB or Twitter even if they're on a locked post.

Please, if you're integrating for whatever reason (comments or just to send your public posts over), be careful about those.

Mostly, I won't post about DW. People on DW don't need me to, and people here either are also there or don't want to be by now. (If I'm wrong, lemme know and I'll see if I can hook you up with an invite code.)

However, the cross-poster has now been induced to sanity and can handle custom friends groups. I will therefore be cross-posting most of my stuff via DW just because I can. (If you are following me on both sites, I recommend you pick one; whichever you prefer to read at, though I'd appreciate not being unfriended on LJ if you post locked entries I currently get to see. If you have no preference, I suggest LJ for reasons noted below.)

I will not be using the feature that directs all comments to DW, and my primary site remains LJ - I read there lots more than at DW. I also may sometimes post to LJ and not DW (my iPhone has an LJ app, no DW app and the LJ app can't be aimed at another server). While I'll probably import periodically to suck those entries into DW, that doesn't put them on your friends list.

I'm not moving Drew's journal, or cloning it, at this time.

I'll try to post something with more actual content sometime in the near future. Actual content requires a brain, however. I think the zombies got mine. I hope they did, SOMEONE ought to benefit from it and I'm surely not. :P
