(Hey, a meme without the sheep icon, even!)
1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?
Hot chocolate. I adore chocolate. Egg nog is ick. This year, alas, neither - I'm holding off on dairy, so no hot chocolate for me either. Good thing I prefer the one that's available year-round anyway!
2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
Wraps. Presents, other than stocking stuffers or the truly awkward (bikes, maybe) are wrapped.
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?
Usually colored - white lights on a tree can be elegant, but the colors are so vivid and brilliant, which I prefer to elegance.
4. Do you hang mistletoe?
No. We did when I was young and I like the tradition, but I don't like the hassle or the question of what happens if a cat or kid manages to eat it.
5. When do you put your decorations up?
No decorations until after Thanksgiving. A live tree waits until 1-2 weeks before Christmas, no more. A fake tree can be put up earlier, since you don't have to worry about the fire hazard / tree drying out factor.
6. What is your favorite holiday dish?
Shrimp cocktail plate! That was always reserved as a Christmas run-up treat. (Fudge, on the candy/dessert side, is a close second - but the shrimp win.)
7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child?
I don't have a single stand-out that is coming to mind now. A warm amalgamation of a pretty tree, wrapped boxes, and a day of warmth and good food and lazing about, is what I can draw to mind.
8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
I don't remember how old I was. I don't even remember the event, just Mom telling me about it - I got up wanting a glass of water and surprised them putting out the Santa stuff. Not only was I dismayed, I also immediately demanded to know if they were the Easter Bunny too, I believe.
9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
I don't remember doing so growing up. Now, we do - but each Christmas Eve it's the same present, new pajamas to wear so we wake up in the morning in the first gift of our Christmas. It's a tradition friends of mine grew up with that sounded so sweet to me that I wanted it for my children. :)
10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
Lights. Some ornaments, currently just the unbreakable ones. :) Or, this year: not much at all.
11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?
New snow: love it. Old dirty snow by the side of the road: bleh. Snow I have to drive in (and worse, have to endure other Oregonians driving in): ARRGH! But I do love a good new snowfall. If the temp is just right so that it sticks on the lawns but not the roads, better still.
12. Can you ice skate?
Not well enough to do anything but follow the wall at a rink, no.
13. Do you remember your favorite gift?
From childhood? No, I don't. :( On the other hand, starting the Christmas season with Ian's arrival this year was sure sweet! :)
14. What’s the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Family and togetherness.
15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?
Homemade fudge.
16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
I think the new Christmas jammies one is a contender. Driving around to see the Christmas lights people have up is a close CLOSE second.
17. What tops your tree?
A little gold star.
18. Which do you prefer giving or receiving?
Both are fun, but I prefer receiving...not for the obvious reason, but because receiving a gift is easy. Picking one out, preparing it, and giving it is a treasure - but not easy, if you're trying for a "right" gift.
19. Candy Canes:
In theory, I love them. In practice, I don't eat them often - I used to when I was younger, though. They're very pretty.
20. Favorite Christmas show?
Not really? I used to love the Charlie Brown Christmas as a kid, but...now, nothing really.
21. Saddest Christmas Song?
The Christmas Shoes. In several senses of the word "sad" ranging from it being sad the kid's mom is dying (and full of over-pushed pathos about it) to it being "sad" in the sense of pathetic that at such a time, everything is focused on the commercial aspect of buying a pair of shoes.
22. What is your favorite Christmas song?
Jingle Bells. Silent Night is a close close second.
