[Intro posted today, because I think I've figured out how this will work. Actual first such post, coming Friday. Sing out if you have input or (would have) wanted to ask for a different venue and didn't have time/see the earlier post!]

I'm trying an experiment in the pattern of [personal profile] jenett's salon posts, including borrowing the name. (Many thank-you's to [personal profile] jenett for saying she doesn't mind if people borrow the idea!) This post is to explain basically what I'm trying to do, and I'll add in

any frequently asked questions as they occur.

What is this 'salon posts' thing?

A 'salon post' is a public post or thread, where I put up a starter post with a topic, prompt, or other seed for discussion, and people

hopefully come in and comment on it, and on each others' comments, and so on. I know a lot of awesome people; they know a lot of awesome people;

I hope we can get a great conversation going here.

Whatever the topic or seed, if the discussion digresses from there, that's fine. Not even fine - it's great. Take it where it leads you,

and have a rousing good conversation. Heck, start a side conversation about something that's just on your mind, not even directly tied to the

topic.

What's the set up / what do I do / where do I comment?

As with all my posts, I will post to both Dreamwidth and LiveJournal. UNLIKE most of my posts, I will then turn commenting off on Dreamwidth.

The idea is to keep all the comments in one place or another so we're having one conversation, not two. And much as I love Dreamwidth, feedback

earlier (in public comment and private message) was that some of my readers are likely to only participate on LiveJournal, or would like to

comment using their Facebook accounts (which LiveJournal supports and Dreamwidth does not). If you find yourself on the Dreamwidth side, the

post will have a link to the LiveJournal copy, which you can follow to join in.

As far as what you do, read, comment as you feel moved, point your friends at it if you think it will interest them.

You can find all my salon posts (and this FAQ) by going to: http://kyrielle.livejournal.com/tag/salon

How do I comment with...?

When you reply to a comment or to the post, there will be a drop-down option next to "From" that lets you select the service. LiveJournal is the

default option, but Facebook, Twitter, OpenID, Google, two options I'm not familiar with, and Anonymous are all supported. Facebook and Twitter

work as you'd expect. OpenID can be used with Dreamwidth, sites running the LiveJournal code, and some other sites do as well - if you use a

site that you know has OpenID, you can use it. Two LiveJournal FAQs:

I don't have a LiveJournal account. Can I still comment?

How can I log in to LiveJournal with OpenID, Facebook, Twitter, or Google? What is an

identity account?

Note that I will have anonymous commenting enabled for the salons, so the requirement to validate your email to comment with external accounts

does not apply. However, you may need to validate your email to receive notifications of replies; I'm not sure.

What are the rules?

[This is cribbed, basically in its entirety, from [personal profile] jenett. Because she said it better than I could have.]

Leave the conversation better than you found it, or at least not worse.

Stuff that makes conversation better: Questions. Engaging with people about what they’ve said in ways that open up new lines of conversation.

Sharing recommendations, ideas, and other cool stuff.

Stuff that makes conversation worse: Bigotry. Insults. Assuming you know more about someone’s lived experience than they do. Putting someone

down. Dismissing someone’s thoughts because they’re not what you want to hear.

My own access lists have a people from a huge range of perspectives, identities, and backgrounds. Please don’t assume you know someone’s Stuff

from what’s publically available about them, or what’s in the comment they just made.

What is the schedule?

Currently, I'm tentatively planning to post each Friday, in the morning Pacific time zone. However, this is an experiment and I may change this

up. I'll try this for at least 3-4 weeks to see how it does, and then revisit whether schedul or content needs to change.

Who are you, anyway?

I figure most of you reading this already know this, but in case you were referred here by someone else - my name is Laura, and I use Kyrielle

as my user name on any site where someone else hasn't beaten me to it. (There *are* sites where I was beaten to it. Not many.) I'm a mother or

two boys (both under 5), a wife, a software engineer, a roleplayer (pen and paper), and a geek. I live in Oregon (Willamette valley area) with

my husband and our sons, two cats, and more stuff than I care to contemplate.
