Saw Spiderman II tonight with Scott. There will be spoilers in this entry; they will be behind cut tags. If you're seeing this in a view that hasn't got them, that's your spoiler warning.
I wasn't sure if I wanted to go to this movie at all, because I'd read a few spoilers ahead of time about how shitty things were for him during the first part of the movie, how his actions caused life to crap on him. I can only take so much of that and was really worried that it would hit my threshold and I'd stop wanting to watch. As it turned out, I was right to be worried; had I gone in cold, I'd have been frustrated and annoyed by the end of that. Even given what it was setting up for, and even given that would have been obvious fairly quickly without having read the spoilers, it still was overkill and sucked and was painful to watch. I actually looked away from the screen once or twice (when I didn't during any of the fight scenes, though I admit to flinching at some of the startles) during that sequence, and tried not to think about it too hard.
So, I'm glad I had those spoilers as it affirmed my hopes for what the payoff would be, and it was. It was really, really cool, and everyone who said that it needed to be seen on the big screen was very, very right, as far as the special effects and such. I'm sure it will be nice when it comes to DVD, but it won't be the same effect.
This is not to say that I wouldn't have liked to see the ending a bit less cliche. Yes, I know, comics, movies, movies made from comics, cliches. But...but...it was so predictable, it was "get it over with" territory. I'd've felt better if she'd told him all that when they were stuck to that web, honestly. I can see where she had to come to terms with it, but it would've been cooler.
The only saving grace was the caviar. 'Nuff said about that.
But yes. Had a good time. Glad I went. Worth the money and even the time. Eye candy at the right moments, real story, and some very touching and funny moments that avoided cliche - for everything I could complain about, there are four or five things I could say were good. Well, I could if I had a memory less like swiss cheese, and if I wanted to concentrate for a while, and if you wanted me to spoiler the movie.
I won't say everyone will like this movie. But if you liked the first one, or you think you'd like this one, well - it lives up to the promise it makes, by being what it is.
