Someplace to be Flying was lovely. I'm so very glad I read it. I'm also glad people pushed me to try other de Lint books after M&D because this is better still than Trader - well, no it's not. It's as good but it's a tale I like better, a tone I like better. In any case, both are worlds above M&D and even having been told, I was a little distrusting of him all the same. I'm glad I was encouraged - and pointed to books that don't betray themselves or seem unbelieveable. (Actually, this is a humorous statement given what he writes; but it's true all the same.)

Notes from yesterday, written at the time but somewhat not posted 'til now:

Ah, all the fun things that happen in an office. We are still without our water service. The tap water is still gross and now we're out of paper cups into the bargain. I am still forgetting my bottled water, so I bought a Sprite. MUST remember bottled water tomorrow.

M brought in some kind of pale soda. He wanted it cold. I put things like that in the fridge. He put his in the freezer. I was coming in to get my burrito out of the microwave and I saw him at the sink trying to open it. It was clearly frozen, so I asked if he could pause while I went to get my food. He moved down the counter to the middle and paused. I crossed, got my food, crossed back and stood near the door chatting about exploding bottles with him. He eased the cap a little further and let it sit. It really did look like it was not going to explode.

Actually, he hadn't broken the seal yet. He twisted the cap a little farther and it abruptly gave, and soda _exploded_ all over the counter, spraying out in an arc that reached most of the room since he was halfway down the counter. The drops hit the floor maybe a foot or two from me, making me glad that paranoia had sent me clear to the doorway.

It was horribly funny but I doubt M was as amused as I was. And I doubt I would be so amused, had I been standing any closer.

And notes from this morning:

It's grey and rainy outside. Really very pretty weather but it makes the short days seem shorter since the morning and evening are so dark. It is supposed to rain all this week now more or less. I am hoping for one evening where it does not. I want to go walking and look at the Christmas lights and try to photograph them. It may be a drive instead, at this rate. I am not seeing a lot of opportunity for this, with this weather. But a walk is so much better. Walking, you can usually stop whenever. Driving you must worry about the guy behind you. We'll see, though. If it is only raining lightly as is often the case, then I won't even mind, will need an umbrella only to protect the camera.

I'm glad you liked Someplace to be Flying. Glad you liked Trader, too (which [livejournal.com profile] drcpunk says is -not- as good as StbF, and I mostly concur; Trader doesn't have the breadth of myth that StbF has, and that hurts it in comparison).
