Babe goes in for her MRI tomorrow (they were able to move it up a day). Things I hope, in order: that all goes smoothly tomorrow, that it's not cancer or anything else unavoidably fatal, that it's curable/fixable, that she gets her vision back.

I am going to be SUCH a bundle of nerves tomorrow. (And the cats will be grouchy by tomorrow morning - food and water fast starting at 10 pm tonight for Babe, which Apple gets to share since isolating her would be difficult. She'll get food and water as soon as Scott and Babe are out the door in the morning, though.)

Ugh! So not fair to have to fast both cats for the sake of one. I don't envy you trying to figure out all the possible avenues for them to circumvent your fasting attempts.

Not too hard, actually; I wasn't worried about Apple circumventing them, as long as she didn't help Babe. And Babe couldn't make it to, nor would she attempt to make it to, the countertop / tabletop when she could see. All we had to do was clear the floor. We considered putting food and water up for Apple, but I don't want to teach her to get up, I've spent a lot of time teaching her not to, and if she knocked it down Babe would get it too. But if Apple hopped up on the counter and cleaned a dirty dish in the sink? I really don't care. I'd have to be a lot more thorough if Apple had to fast....

Best of luck with it. I've never been sure, for similar mandated fasts, whether it was less stressful for both of them to deal with it, or to shut one away in a room with a litter tray and let the other have the run of the house.

I normally let them graze, but technically it's fine to feed cats of their age and health twice a day and pick it up after an hour. Dinner goes down at 6 pm - so they had four hours to eat dinner before the fast started. Normally, breakfast is at 6 - Apple had to wait until about 7:20, when Babe and her carrier went out the door. Not too bad.

As far as shutting them away, the only option for that would be the upstairs hall bath, and in weather like we've been having it turns into an unpredictable periodic oven of a room. It probably would have been okay overnight, but I'd hate to risk it - and neither of them like being shut in or dealing with closed doors, either. I'd've felt worse about that than about Apple sharing the fast.
